Hacking Hate shadows Swedish journalist and true-life ‘girl with a dragon tattoo’ My Vingren as she goes undercover to track an elusive far right digital influencer and unpack how social media platforms amplify and profit from extreme, polarising and hateful content.
Against a backdrop of the first-ever framework for global governance of the digital space, and a fraught US election period where the battle of opinions was being fought online, Hacking Hate was presented by Think-Film as a key voice spotlighting the urgency of addressing the prevalence of far-right hate online and stemming the monetisation of hate to protect democracy.
- A Tribeca Festival World Premiere high-visibility panel on how nonfiction media can contribute to a healthier information ecosystem demonstrated the film’s broad topic relevance, generated wider audience attention for the other festival screenings, and made connections with 50+ industry figures, supporting distribution possibilities.
- A high-impact screening at Scandinavia House in New York City with opening remarks from Deputy Ambassador of Canada to the UN Michael Gort and an expert panel, generated influential attention and support for Hacking Hate by spotlighting the urgency and importance of tackling hate online through a business lens.
- A full panel recording and post-event blog-style write up captured and shared key speaker points, supporting continuation of film sale and distribution.
